This skin type is characterized by an overproduction of sebum forming an oily film on the skin, which clogs pores and oxidizes on exposure to the air. This causes impurities and blackheads, particularly in the T-zone (forehead, nose and chin).

Excessive sebum production results not only in blemishes and a shiny face: the pH levels become altered and the skin’s natural protection is reduced, favouring bacterial growth.

Harmful substances like dust, dirt and smog cling to the oily surface and become easily trapped, causing blemishes and irritations that prevent the skin from breathing correctly and receiving oxygen.

Unable to renew itself properly, the skin becomes thick and irregular, easily inflamed, with enlarged pores.

Naturally thin and fragile, this skin type is the result of underactive sebaceous glands and is characterized by deficient hydro-lipid film. Moisturizing however does not mean ‘wetting the skin’, which is waterproof and does not absorb water; treating dry skin entails restoring and maintaining regular moisture in the outer layer, strengthening the hydro-lipid film to improve the skin’s ability to retain moisture.

The physiology of babies’ skin, especially before they are one year old, is very different from that of adults:

•the thin lower dermis is has small, undeveloped collagen and elastic fibres;
